Fiber optic patchcords provide a highly reliable signal transmission method and are widely used in the telecommunications industry. This can be a challenging task when choosing the correct fiber optic patch cord for a data center or network, because there are many types on the market. Knowing the types of fiber optic patch cords will be of great help.

What is optical fiber patchcord?

Optical fiber patchcord is a kind of optical fiber cable with LC, SC and other connectors at both ends. Sometimes it is called a fiber optic patchcord. Fiber patchcords play an important role in indoor applications such as server rooms. Usually, they are used to connect fiber optic transmitters and receivers, such as fiber optic transceivers.

Know the types of fiber optic patchcords

Optical fiber patchcord are divided into different types according to optical cable mode, transmission mode and connector type.

Fiber optic cable mode: single-mode and multi-mode

The mode of the fiber optic cable indicates how the light beam propagates within the fiber optic cable. Single-mode fiber patchcord allow only one mode of light to pass along its length, and have a very thin diameter of 8-10 microns. Therefore, it can transmit signals at higher speeds with lower attenuation, and is suitable for long-distance transmission. Single-mode fiber jumpers (OS1, OS2) are yellow.

Multimode fiber patchcords are more complicated. It is usually orange (OM1, OM2), light green (OM3, OM4) or green (OM5). Multimode fiber has a larger core, usually 50 or 62.5 microns, and can transmit multiple light modes. Multimode fiber patchcords are mainly used for short distances, such as transmission in buildings or campuses. It should be noted that these two modes are incompatible, and one cannot substitute one for the other.

Transmission mode: simplex and duplex

Simplex fiber optic patch cords have an optical fiber and a connector at each end. It is usually used when data transmission only needs to be transmitted in one direction. In contrast, duplex fiber optic patch cords have two fibers and two connectors at each end. The signal in the duplex fiber needs to be transmitted in both directions, also known as two-way communication.

Connector type: LC/SC/FC/ST/LSH/MU/MTRJ

There are many connector types for fiber optic patch cords, such as LC, SC, FC, ST, LSH, MU and MTRJ.

LC fiber optic patchcord. Its LC connector is a small square connector, which is currently the most popular connector.

SC fiber patchcord. This type of fiber patchcord type connector is square, similar to an LC connector, but approximately twice the size.

FC fiber optic patchcord. This patch lead connector uses a round and threaded design.

ST optical fiber patchcord. Its connector is circular and adopts bayonet mounting design.

LSH optical fiber patchcord. The patch lead connector is equipped with a dust cover, which can be automatically closed after the optical fiber is taken out.

MU fiber optic patchcord. The MU connector looks like an SC connector, but with a ferrule about half the size.

MTRJ optical fiber patchcord. MTRJ stands for Mechanical Transfer Registration. MTRJ uses two optical fibers and integrates them into a design that looks similar to an RJ45 connector.

Please note that fiber optic patchcords can be terminated using the same connector type or a mixed connector type. The same connector type means that both ends of the fiber patchcord must be a connector type. For the hybrid type, one end can be SC, and the other end can be LC, FC, etc. The user must also pay attention to the different polishing types. There are three types of fiber optic connectors that can be applied to PC, UPC and APC. Each polishing type represents a different level of back reflection. Users can choose one according to actual needs.

Conclusion

These are the most common types of fiber optic patch cords. If you clearly understand the different types of fiber optic patchcords, you can determine which type of characteristics you need, and then make the right choice when choosing. At FS.COM, we have a full range of fiber optic patchcords, and we also provide customized services. Welcome to buy.
